Too Fat
Yes it is your fault...but...your brain has been short circuited by modern food and food advertising.
People are too damn fat. Obesity gives you a higher chance of dying especially during Covid as 30% of the population is obese but 80% of the deaths on a respirator for Covid are obese. You can do something about this. There are three ways when it comes to what you eat.
1) You can restrict the types of food. This is the world of diet books making money. Fat is out, then it is in. Carbs are out then they are in. Protein is out then it is in. Pretty much all of this is bullshit. Ditto for vitamins/supplements! As the old saying goes, “You gotta make money or you gotta make sense (cents).” So stop buying diet books.
2) You can restrict the amount of food that you eat. In the photographic record of the horror of humans throughout recent history starving other humans to kill them, one never sees obese victims. As awful of an example that this is, it makes sense from a thermodynamic (physics) point of view.
3) You can restrict the timing of food. In the early homo sapiens days as we came out of the trees and onto the plains of Africa we probably ate every few days. Maybe. We’d kill a mastodon every once in a blue moon and feast for a short time then starve for a while. This makes sense from an evolutionary (biology) point of view.
Fasting is becoming mainstream. Rather than treating maturity onset diabetes (these are for the most part overweight patients) with every escalating doses of insulin which really just makes them fatter, endocrinologists are using time restricted feeding.
Think of your kidneys.
You take in a big wack of salt and water. The kidneys dramatically increase their blood flow and fairly quickly these two organs keep the salt and water you need and send the excess to the bladder to be pissed out of the system. Blood flow to the kidneys then returns to baseline. But now in this modern world of food advertising you are told starting when you are a small child in front of the TV to eat three meals a day with snacks in between. This is provided to you in tin foil bags packed with grease,sugar and salt for the most part by the trillion dollar food industry. And it is really good. And it is really cheap. Early homo sapiens did not have this but modern homo sapiens sure does. So now the kidneys have that massive blood flow all day long which accounts for a lot of the hypertension and heart disease in today’s western world populations. I will let you google renal hormones and cortical vs medullary renal blood flow if you want more info.
Think of your pancreas.
You take in a big wack of grease and sugar. The pancreas secretes out digestive enzymes (basically biological detergents) into your gut to break down the fat and the pancreas secretes insulin into your blood to shove the sugar (basically firewood) into your cells (basically fireplaces) to give you energy (basically heat) so you can live. Nature has given the pancreas a fixed number of these enzyme/insulin shots. Some folks use up all the bullets in fifty years and some use them up in ninety years. Your choice (not totally of course, but definitely somewhat).

Too Fat Follow Up
To recap you can think a) like a physicist (total calories in more than total calories expended then you are fat), b)like an evolutionary biologist (timing of your eating like when we were cavemen means time restricted fasting that is all the rage now works) or c)like a marketer with a book or product to sell (which type of food, protein, fat, or carbs or which type of vitamin or supplement you take is the most important).
The “a” part is based historically on the development of calorimeters in physics which traditionally burned stuff up to measure heat but now could be applied to dogs in a lab with a room sized calorimeter to measure heat coming from a biological specimen. And no, you did not have to kill the dog. It is still the dominant mode of thinking, even making it to the TV shows like “Biggest Loser”. Once you get into the details it is not all that clear cut but the laws of thermodynamics have not disappeared.
The “b” part is based on the evolutionary behaviours that allowed us as Homo Sapiens to stay alive. We have done well at that historically but we are now changing evolution with our technology so who knows. Our technology now feeds us a lot of stuff in tinfoil packages these days that is rocket fuel fat/sugar/protein. Why? Because it is cheap and it is good (tasting that is!). Maybe we will wind up one day like the big blobs on a spaceship as depicted in the movie Wall-E.
The “c” part is about marketing. Or, if you want to be really brutally honest…..lying. It has what has bonded humans together as its upside. It has made people sick as its downside. So basically stop eating stuff that is basically high density sugar and/or fat packed into a tin foil pouch in a factory somewhere. And while you are at it, add years to your mental life by turning off or ignoring anything (like mainstream media) pushing food advertising on you next to a constant barrage of dystopian murders and environmental disasters.
Bottom line? There are a billion people on this planet now that go to sleep hungry and two billion who go to sleep obese. Most people living in a western liberal democracy are carrying too much weight. So experiment on yourself. Don’t go crazy. But do what you feel makes you feel better.
